for the next debates? >> i think romney has to continue to hammer at these points. he gave a foreign policy speech, this monday, i am afraid it's a little bit late. when we were seized in the libya story and the american embassies were under attack from tunisia to indonesia, that was the time that he should have given it. now, he will be giving it. i think it's a great negatism but tell take the focus off the economy, which is where romney was scoring so heavily. he has to come back to the economy. stay on these points. he has to be a little bit wary because obama's going to come into the second debate, with low expectations and the second thing about this is, the second debate is going to be in a town hall that. places to obama's strengths. the relation with the audience. he has a way of connecting -- he did in the past. romney has trouble with that. if you remember the clinton/bush i debate, clinton won outright. so romney has to prepare for low expectations for obam awhich will help obama. he has to practice in a forum, in which he can relax with the audience. however, he has one great a

% for romney, among likely voters, within the margin of error. there's a lot of debate over whether these debates can make a difference in these elections. looking in history, they have in in the past. in 1960 they helped john kennedy overtake richard nixon. 1980 helped reagan over take carter. 2000 helped bush overtake gore. romney was behind in 02 race for governor in massachusetts, he was trailing badly six weeks before the election. the campaign reorganized, romney pulled his advisors together. they decided on a new strategy which was to get tough and get specific and romney went on to win that 2002 race for governor in massachusetts. so we will see if he can repeat history here with these debates starting tonight. dagen and connell? connell: peter barnes reporting from denver for us. let's go to ron paul now, republican congressman from texas and former presidential candidate himself. he's calling in today on the telephone from texas. congressman paul, always good to talk to you. if a paul supporter is watching the debate tonight and needs to be convinced by romney, what does r

tonight's debate. more importantly, this is a stage where president obama and governor mitt romney will hopefully define their positions on the key domestic issues facing our nation. that's what's on the agenda for this debate tonight; jobs, the economy, health care. but first, a new distraction for the obama campaign during a critical week. it comes in the form of a video released by "the daily caller" of then-presidential candidate barack obama back in 2007. in it he speaks to a group mostly made up of black pastors. his speech got some coverage at the time he delivered it, but his prepared remarks did not include some of the off-the-cuff, off-prompter moments, if you will, alluding to alleged racism to hurricane katrina and spending decisions made by our elected leaders. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live in washington with more. mike? >> reporter: hi, megyn. the tone has attracted some attention with then-candidate obama sounding different as he spoke to a large group of african-american religious leaders in virginia. one major topic was mr. obama trying
